Brackenfield Heritage Trail

  • Brackenfield Heritage Trail has been developed by a group of local people united by their fascination with local history, love of the countryside and passion for walking. Their aim was to make an entertaining and interesting resource that would enhance visitors’ experience and enjoyment of the area. This has been a real community effort involving a wide range of partners. Land owners and farmers, local Ramblers, DCC and volunteer footpaths reps, locally-based consultants and social enterprise workers have all pulled together with the Trail Group to get it up and running. We are grateful to Tesco Bags of Help and DCC  Community Priorities Fund for their financial support. We hope you enjoy your walk!

    The Route

This trail is a fascinating 8k/5-mile, circular walk, which takes in some of Brackenfield's most scenic views, monuments and historic sites. It starts outside Brackenfield Church Hall (DE55 6AQ), follows paths up to Highoredish viewpoint, via Trinity Chapel, before descending to Berridge Lane Nature Reserve and returning past Clattercotes Farm, Woolley, Ogston New Road, Brackenfield Church and Millers Lane.

There is a shorter 4k/2.5-mile route returning to the Green from Highoredish via The Griffs and Carr Lane. An accessible circuit round The Green takes in two Points of Interest and an area of woodland.

You are advised to use the directions below in conjunction with Ordnance Survey maps: OS 269 Explorer (Chesterfield and Alfreton) or OS 119 Landranger

QR plaque 1 is on the signpost on the junction of Brackenfield Lane and School Lane, next to The Green

    Information Panel

A brand new information panel was installed on Brackenfield Green in July 2022. Designed by the Heritage Trail Group, it shows an overview of the route on an OS map, pictures of some of the highlights and snippets of historical information. It is situated at the north end of Brackenfield Lane, near the bus stop/benches and can be used as a start point for the Trail.

    Feedback

We would love to hear your comments and suggestions including any problems you encounter on the Trail so that we can do our best to deal with them.   Please send your comments to secretary@brackenfield.org

Take care in the Berridge Lane Nature Reserve during this period. The land owners are planning to fix the path close to the stream where it has been eroded in recent flooding. Until this work is completed you are advised to take an alternative route.

    The Launch: 17th July 2022
